Anywhere & Anywhen

Conceptual Historical Typography Exhibition (2022)

This project conceptualizes a museum exhibition centering on the historical and cultural impact made by the iconic typeface, Cooper Black. Beginning as a standard typeface mainly meant for advertising purposes, Cooper Black’s reputation has evolved into that of a broadly used and easily recognizable typeface, understood as vintage yet contemporary, nostalgic yet trendy. “Anywhere & Anywhen” explores the change and growth of Cooper Black’s usage and feel from its conception to the current day.

Even in the early drafts of this project, I wanted to focus on the unique letterforms that make Cooper Black so easily recognizable and popular. The ampersand is one of them— using this specific form and pairing it with the images of different hands represent the wide usage that Cooper Black has seen. Cooper Black’s users have existed across different artistic spaces as well as across time, reaching for the typeface to use it in new ways. We can always recognize Cooper Black, no matter where—or when—we find it.
